WTIP is proud to announce that Kalli Hawkins is joining the news department as a reporter/producer.
His first day with WTIP was April 18.
Hawkins grew up in the Grand Marais. She graduated from Cook County High School in 2006. After high school, Hawkins moved to the Twin Cities and attended the University of Minnesota. She moved to Colorado in 2011 and graduated from Metropolitan State University in Denver. She studied geography, with a concentration in sustainable development.
While pursuing her studies, Hawkins began a career in writing and freelance outdoor media. She joins WTIP with a strong interest in outdoor recreation. Many of his stories will focus on the natural world, particularly the woods and waters of Cook County.
“We are delighted to have Kalli join the WTIP press team,” said News Director Joe Friedrichs. “His strong community ties, along with a keen interest and understanding of the local outdoor scene, is gold when it comes to local news reporting.”
Reporter Rhonda Silence will assist Hawkins as she learns reporting details for WTIP. A longtime Cook County reporter, Silence will retire in the coming weeks. However, Silence plans to continue contributing to the WTIP and will remain involved in the future of the station.
Silence also expressed joy at Hawkins’ hiring and said it was nice to see another Cook County graduate join the community radio station. She said, “Kalli has started and will be a great fit for the WTIP team.”
