BEATRICE – The Lower Big Blue Natural Resource District and the Swan 5 Advisory Council hosted their 20E Annual Free Family Fishing Day and Youth Fishing and Casting Derby last Saturday at the Willard L. Meyer Recreation Area near Tobias.

The day included a youth fishing derby, casting contest, BB gun shooting, Nebraska parks and games fishing exhibit, trapping demonstration, hay rack rides and a lunch of hot- free dogs.

More than 80 children aged 1 to 18 braved cooler than normal temperatures to participate in the Youth Fishing Derby. Prizes were awarded for the most fish caught, the biggest fish caught, the smallest fish caught and the casting contest.

The top winners in each age group were: 5 years and under: Most fish– Howard Senft, Lincoln; The biggest fish– Klancy Kunc, Wilber; The smallest fish– Oliver Keller, Crete; casting contestRowan Sedlachek, Lincoln.

6-9 years: Most fish-Ava Jerrod, Wymore; The biggest fish-Charles Koll, Wilber; The smallest fish-Franklin Koll, Wilber; casting competition– Kalen Sedlachek, Lincoln;

10-12 years old: Most fish-Jayton Jones, Daykin; The biggest fish-Truitt Stohs, Wilber; The smallest fish-Jacob McClement, Tobias; casting contest-Henry Koll, Wilber;

13-18 years old: Most fish-Keith Kemmerling, Dorchester; The biggest fishOlivia Schäfer, Daykin; The smallest fish– Cheston Stewart, West; casting contest-Keith Kemmerling, Dorchester.
