WCMH NBC4 in Columbus is hiring its next deputy news director.

This individual will help lead our diverse team of reporters and oversee the daily operation of a newsroom focused on breaking news, weather and our community.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about local journalism with strong leadership skills and excellent news judgment who excels in topical situations.

Candidates should have previous information management experience that includes recruiting, training, and coaching employees to be their best.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with journalists, producers, digital producers, assignment desk
  • Review daily news scripts and summaries to ensure quality control
  • Facilitate editorial meetings
  • Develop coverage plans for breaking news and special events
  • Oversee the press room schedule
  • Assist with employee training, feedback and evaluations
  • Assist in recruiting and hiring information department staff
  • Work with the News Director to set goals and develop a strategic plan for the newsroom
  • Direct the breaking news by producing efforts from the control room when necessary
  • Additional responsibilities assigned by news director

Requirements & Skills:

  • Knowledge of journalistic ethics, defamation and privacy laws
  • Strong editorial judgment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • At least four years of experience in the production of newsletters, able to supervise the management of counters and backtiming of producers
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Available to work all shifts and be part of an on-call rotating weekend manager

The Multimedia Journalist produces, reports, films, writes, voices, edits and powers news production content for all platforms in a way that is clear, engaging and meaningful to news consumers.

  • Reports news stories for broadcast, describing background and details of events
  • Arrange interviews with people who can provide information about stories
  • Determines the emphasis, length and format of a story, and organizes the material accordingly
  • Research and analysis of contextual information related to news to be able to provide complete and accurate information
  • Gathers information about events through research, interviews, experiences, or participation in political, news, sports, arts, social, or other functions
  • Provides news managers and news producers with stories relevant to the local community
  • Receives assignments and evaluates leads and tips to develop story ideas
  • Discuss issues with producers and/or information managers to establish priorities or positions
  • Checks reference material such as books, news files, or public records for relevant facts
  • Revises work to meet editorial approval or to meet time requirements
  • Films and edits current events and reports
  • Write, produce and present reports for all platforms
  • Ensures that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality
  • Interacts with viewers/users on social media sites
  • Executes special projects and other assigned tasks
  • Builds a network of sources and contacts to develop exclusive local story ideas
  • Checks story submissions and ideas to determine relevance and viability

Requirements & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • fluent English
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to respond at will if needed
  • Minimum of two years of experience in news reporting (Depending on market size)
  • Superior on-air presence
  • Proficiency with computers, cell phones and linear editing equipment
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Flexibility to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays
