Beyond Print: The Future of News Media
Earlier this year, Justin Smith co-founded Semafor with former New York Times columnist Ben Smith. Semafor, launched in October, will target around 250 million English speakers worldwide. It will feature texts, videos, and events across Africa, Asia, and the United States, among other regions. Mr Smith, who was the managing director of Bloomberg Media until January this year, believes that the global English public is still served by brands like the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post or The Economist which were created in the 19th century and get most of their business from their home markets. Semafor raised $25 million from individual investors instead of venture capitalists.
